Summary
This winter (2004-2005), we are starting an intellectual experiment at Bremen University in order to develop a new concept for family support and parent education. We have invited a number of international as well as German experts in the field of innovative family education to give keynotes in a series of public lectures at the university. They will try and look into the future of parent education and family support from their specific research focus and experience.

Context
Germany is in a crisis: economical crisis, employment crisis, educational crisis, family crisis. Everyone is talking about reforms, many programmes are initiated, there have been changes, but nothing has worked and been established on a larger scale so far.

We see an urgent need to combine existing concepts and expertise of practitioners and researchers to create a model which could establish and sustain family support and -education in Germany. This is supported by government initiatives. The national family minister has called for sustainable policies in the interest of an active population development. He believes in mixing policies of financial support with policies to improve childcare facilities and increase their availability to all families and facilitate the combination of work and childcare for parents.
